Key Skills - Communication

There are three aspects to fulfilling the Key Skill in Communication:

Contribute to discussion
Read and synthesise information
Presentation of information
It is hoped that this work will be done in the period January to March 2002.

3.1a Contribute to Discussion

For the AS 9 Internal Assessment Unit (Coursework), three titles have been submitted and approved by CCEA. The choice of title and methodology will be the focus for discussion. Pupils, after some preliminary investigation will participate in a discussion about the merits of each title.

They may choose a title from one of the following areas:

Suffering,
Death and the Afterlife
Sin and Repentance

Having selected a title, pupils will form groups and they will continue to discuss, along with other pupils who have chosen the same title, about a methodology to falafel the Internal Assessment requirements.

Suggested methods used by other groups in the past are outlined on the RESite on the Intranet.

3.1b Preliminary presentation

Each pupil will be expected to present a case to justify their chosen method of study, but also to be aware of the opportunities and pitfalls that their chosen method of study presents.

Methods to be used may include Handouts, PowerPoint Presentations, Overhead Projection etc. A range of methods is suggested. Each presentation will finish with a question and answer session.

3.2 Read and Synthesise Information

Each pupil should use at least two alternative sources e.g. Internet documents (as listed on the RESite), NIV Study Bible (CDRom), Encarta (CDRom) and a range of articles and books. The sources should reflect the disparate views held on the chosen area of study.

Produce a draft outline showing that the pupils have been able to synthesise these views into a coherent informed opinion. Using a range of sources, each pupil is expected to relate aspects of their chosen area of study to a range of human experiences, using a range of different sources, e.g. newspaper articles, Internet, CDRom, etc.

3.3

Presentation of Information

Document one - Preliminary Presentation as used for (3. 1b) above.

Document two - Final piece of work to be submitted to CCEA for Internal Assessment
This is an extended piece of writing (1500 - 1750 words). It will involve:
Selecting from a considerable amount of material researched
Presenting this in a considered and coherent manner.
It should reflect a mature understanding of disparate views and opinions relative to a range of human experiences.
